    SEO contracts have a reputation for a reason. Vague deliverables, aggressive lock-in clauses, performance guarantees that only apply to metrics the agency controls, and escape hatches buried in the fine print that make early exit nearly impossible. The industry has earned its skepticism.

    AI SEO contracts have all the same potential pitfalls with an additional layer: the complexity of the methodology makes it easier for agencies to obscure what they’re actually committing to. If you don’t know exactly what “semantic entity mapping” or “probabilistic content scoring” should produce as a deliverable, it’s hard to know when you’re being sold something credible versus something vague dressed up in sophisticated language.

    This checklist exists to protect you before you sign anything.

    Before the Contract: Questions to Ask First

    1. Ask for a methodology walkthrough — not a presentation, a walkthrough.

    There’s a difference. A presentation is a polished sales deck.
